View of the city of Batavia (with a distant view of the mountain overhanging the Valley of the Upas) An extremely rare and beautifully hand-colored steel engraving showing the city of Batavia from the seaside with a giant mountain overlooking the town. In the foreground are a couple ships flying the British flag, and the city of Batavia looks to be quite early, as it is small but heavily fortified with 4 churches in the distance. Engraved by T. Dixon based on a painting by W.M. Craig and published by Henry Fisher in 1818.
Very suitable for framing.
