J.C. Rappard, an army officer and artist, spent much of his career in Indonesia. He was in Indonesia between 1842 and 1872. He produced water color drawings for a series of chromolithographs illustrating topographical views and colonial life in the Dutch East Indies of the time. These popular prints were first published in 1881-83 in Leiden, the Netherlands. (See Bastin and Brommer Nineteenth Century Prints and Illustrated Books of Indonesia).
