A Plan of the City and Castle of Batavia

Rare English copperplate engraving of the Old City of Batavia, Java, the VOC trading post that became the capital of the Dutch East Indies. 

Published in London in the year 1747 by the famous Emanuel Bowen in his "A complete system of geography. Being a description of all the countries, islands, cities, chief towns, harbours, lakes, and rivers, mountains, mines, &c. of the known world" . 

Emanuel Bowen (1694?–1767) was an English map engraver, who worked for George II of England and Louis XV of France as a geographer. He worked as a map and print seller in London from about 1714, producing some of the best and attractive maps of the century.
