Based out of Christchurch, New Zealand, Edmund Wheeler was a British migrant to the antipodes. Edmund Wheeler and Son of Colombo St., Christchurch, New Zealand was one of the very early photography studios in the antipodean islands. Opening in 1863 or 1864 by Edmund Wheeler (1800-1877,) his fame increased upon taking and selling portraits of then Governor Sir G. F. Bowen. His son, Edmund Richard Wheeler (1842-1933,) assisted his father and ran the business after the senior Wheeler's passing. In 1894, the junior Wheeler published a two-volume album of New Zealand's landscape called "The Imperial Album of New Zealand Scenery.)
