Makassar, Celebes (near Fort Rotterdam)

The city of Makassar in southern Celebes was a major port in Dutch times. One of its landmarks is the famous Fort Rotterdam whose field can be seen on the left side of this photograph. Makassar itself largely grew after the 17th century as a harbour for ships coming to and from the Moluccas. In today's Indonesia, the city is still the largest in Sulawesi (Celebes) and has become a multicultural metropolis.

In the photo a few native workers can be seen.

Slight fold on left side of photograph.
