Toekang Babie

Photograph of a street vendor in Batavia titled "Toekang Babie."

These types of wandering vendors were and still are very common in the streets of Batavia/Jakarta. A Toekang Babie was someone who sold pork door-to-door. This may take the form of pork buns, char siu, or even uncooked pork. Toekang Babies were Chinese, since the mostly Muslim Betawi people consider pork forbidden food.
