British Malaya An Account of the Origin and Progress of British Influence in Malaya

First 1907 edition of Frank Swettenham's "British Malaya ~ An Account of the Origin and Progress of British Influence in Malaya".  With a specially compiled map, numerous illustrations reproduced from photographs and a frontispiece in photogravure.

British Malaya is a classic and exhaustive description of the British possessions in Southeast Asia. Swettenham himself was the Resident-General of the Federated Malay States from 1896-1901. The Federated Malay States would form the core of modern-day Malaysia, being a federation of Selangor, Perak, Negeri Sembilan, and Pahang, even having Kuala Lumpur as its capital.

The book features a first-person account of British Malaya focusing on Peninsular Malaysia, the part jutting out of the Asian mainland. Swettenham’s book includes anthropological, naturalist, and geographic description of the country he once governed.

British Malaya,

The Malacca Strait was of utmost importance during the Age of Exploration because it was the path to the Spice Islands. Originally controlled by the Portuguese, the British moved to secure the Indies starting from the late 18th century. During the Napoleonic Wars of the early 19th century, the British were able to secure Dutch possessions such as Malacca, laying the foundation for future British Malaya. Eventually, British Malaya came to include territories of current Malaysia but also Singapore, Brunei, and even parts of Thailand and Indonesia.
