Rare and attractive late 17th-century French miniature map of Japan, with a decorative title cartouche showing trumpet-blowing cherubs. The map is of interest for the use of the sea between Korea and Japan, here called "Ocean Oriental" and "Jedo" (Edo) is misspelt as "Iede".

By Allain Manneson Mallet (1630-1706), a well-travelled military engineer and geographer who worked in 17th century France under King Louis XIV. In Paris in1683, he published a five-volume book entitled, Description de L’Univers. The work was extensively illustrated with nearly 700 engravings, including miniature maps, charts, plans and views.
