A finely engraved Mariners map of the world published in Venice by Giovanni A. Magini. The map reflects the belief in wide Arctic sea passages, various projected Arctic islands and depicts a huge southern continent, to which Magini has added fanciful ranges of mountains and imaginary rivers. No Great Lakes are shown and California is not yet an Island. The straits of Magellan are shown, and across from them, Terra del Fuego. Below Southern Africa is a province called Terra Australis. Australia is still shown as part of the Southern Land, but separated from the Java south coast; it includes Marco Polo's province of Lucach Maletur. New Guinea is also shown as a separate island. Interesting early projections of both North and South America, with Quivera and the Straits of Anian named, along with Florida and Norobega. Several mythical Islands, including Frieslandt and Irlant are shown. This map appeared in Magini's "Geographiae Universae”. The Magini's 1596 edition of Geographiae was the first reduced-size version of Mercator's atlas. The map is crisscrossed by rhumb lines and the oceans are stipple engraved in the Italian style.
