An attractively hand colored copper engraving of the roadstead of Batavia with many ships in the foreground, colored by hand, after Johannes Vingboons circa 1760. Featured in Brommer’s Batavia (BAT P20).
The VOC fortified city of Batavia is shown with the Batavia castle - the headquarters of the VOC and serves mainly for protection against native enemies. A note made by a scholar is the curious lengthening - by artistic licence- of the city wall on the left. The waves of the ocean are especially striking as are the clouds above. In excellent condition with little to no sign of aging or damage with three vertical folds. A very rare and unique collectors item.
